Living here in the U.S.A I sometimes hear news from Canada quite late, but I could never forget Bob! He was one of the most Chasismatic Canadian leaders I ever met. I remember well having a private dinner with him in Ottawa in 1988 prior to being elected to the Durham Regional Government. He was truly an inspiational leader for so many of us.

I was so sorry to hear that Bob had died and send my love to his family and friends. I only met Bob once but the meeting has stayed in my memory because he was so full of life, interesting, and thoughtful. He spoke of his family with such joy but also made me feel that he was also really interested in my life and story. I got the impression that he did that for a lot of people! Wonderful man.

Bob White was a true Canadian hero for so many who came of age in the union movement, in many professions, in the 1980's. His extraordinary leadership in creating the Canadian Auto Workers inspired so many to fight for a national union movement which regarded Canadian workers needs as paramount. His actions as CLC leader and his always clear voice on the left inspired generations to work for change. He will be sorely missed by the nation.

I would first of all extend my heart felt condolences to the family of Bob, I can only imagine the grief the entire family is enduring. You as a family will have many more memories and smiles to remember him by, my own story line is 2 fold.

I had the great honour of being in Bob's presence involving labour relations and also being with him in social settings. Bob was truly a remarkable man in his ability to communicate whatever message he wanted to convey, whether that be to the corporate world, government leaders or labour leaders, but in particular his ability to talk to working people, not down to them but rather at their level. He could be articulate and hard nosed when that is what was called for.

He possessed one of the most gregarious personalities I have ever encountered, his sense of humour still brings a smile to this old face of mine when I recall many of those high intensity stress filled meetings, where he could break the tension in the room with some hilarious antedote.

He gave me something that all of us cherish, TIME, time to explain, ask questions or be heard, when others were less generous. Bob will be missed, he was a leader provincially and federally. His memory should be a beacon of light for others to work hard to achieve that kind of humanity and understanding.

Farewell Brother, go rest easy on that mountain, your time here has passed, but your memory will be forever with us. May we all be so bold and adventurous in our lives to make this a better place to live and work in.

Marilyn, I was out of the country when I heard that Bob had passed away. My deepest condolences to you and the family. As you know, I had the utmost respect for Bob. He was a strong union leader, a skilled negotiator and a fine human being. Although we met on opposite sides of the table in difficult negotiations at Air Canada and CP Rail, disputes were never personal with Bob and we always managed to find solutions to our mutual problems...and I always enjoyed our annual games of golf in the summers. Bob still features prominently in my Collective Bargaining Courses at Queen's U and 'lives on' through the film Final Offer which has never been replicated. May he rest in peace.

Bob was a good trade unionist, a good leader, and a good person. I first met him when I was Executive Assistant to the President of the AFL-CIO and he has just become CLC President. I was prepared to dislike him because I was originally from the UAW and he had led the split to form the CAW. However, when he introduced me to others by saying, "we come from the same union", I immediately took a liking to him. He maintained s strong international solidarity sense and maintained excellent relations with the AFL-CIO and great contributions to the ICFTU and the ILO. He was an excellent President of TUAC and was comfortable and effective whether it was in our ranks, with top economists, or with world leaders. Bob fought to make the lives of workers and the community fairer and better and his contributions will live on for many generations to come.

I was lucky to have met Bob White a long time ago when I along with other employees at Air Canada were trying to change our Company Empoyee Association into a union. Which we did and called it Canadian Air Line Employees Association (CALEA) After many years on our own we merged with CAW and now UNIFOR. Hello. My name is Percy Hatfield. I am the MPP for Windsor-Tecumseh. Here is what I said in the Provincial Parliament this afternoon: "Speaker, earlier today we in this House held a moment of silence on the passing of a great Canadian, Bob White. We honoured Bob White because of his enormous contributions to social justice and for his leadership within the Canadian labour movement. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and got a job in a furniture plant in Woodstock. He became a Shop Steward, the President of his plant's United Auto Worker's local, and soon became an International UAW Rep, and in 1978, the UAW's Canadian Director. That's when I first met him. He was in Windsor often in those days. In a city built on the auto industry - as reporters, we covered every word he said. Of course, sometimes we had to bleep out some of them. I well remember the NFB's 1985 documentary "Final Offer" and the acrimonious split from the American union leadership that followed that round of contract talks. The internal fight to form the Canadian Auto Workers union was not an easy one. Without Bob White I doubt it could have happened back then. He was a visionary who made it easier for women, immigrants and people of colour to assume leadership roles. He went on to lead the Canadian Labour Congress. He's an Officer of the Order of Canada. He has honorary degrees from the Universities of Windsor, Toronto, York and St. F X. I last saw Bob a few years ago tearing up the dance floor at a banquet in Windsor, I think for the Unemployed Help Centre. He was a hero to many of us, especially rank and file members and retirees, because - he never forgot where he came from. I am pleased to say we were friends. My condolences to his family, and to all of those whose lives he touched over these many years."

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. White in the early 80's. We were both staying in the same hotel. I was a young manager in the food business. We were both eating alone. I introduced myself and we fell into a conversation. Although I was green and an enthusiastic capitalist, Mr. white was patient and, in retrospect, indigent. He never killed me with his wit or his conviction. He listened and encouraged me to see the value of labour as a greater good than capital itself. It was many years later that I came to a full embrace of that notion. He was wise, in a word. I have always though highly of him. Even for me. A ship passing in the night, he was a teacher and a guide. And his teaching left an indelible mark. On me. On the labour movement. On Canada.

When we were little we all had heroes. Mine were Spiderman and Guy Lafleur. Time went by and we grow up and heroes become a child's thought or remote pastime. I started working at the CAMI plant almost 27 years ago with little to no interest in the Union. I was a farm boy and could work in any factory and hold my own with any worker. But I got tired of being kicked around and started reading and taking some courses. The more I read the more I learned. To the working class Bob White became a true hero. He would speak for thousands who could not be heard. I had the honour and pleasure to meet a couple of times with Bob privately. We were both from Woodstock, both from a farm and he helped create CAMI. He told me to always, always tell your members the truth, good or bad, trust them with the truth. Bob was the guest speaker at a May Day celebration at Notre Dame Secondary School in Brampton a few years ago. Bob was a true inspiration for me and my CUPE sisters and brothers at the Nepean Public Library (now Ottawa). He was instrumental in our achieving equal pay for equal work, at a time when library workers were mainly women.
